From ‘Next MGR’ to ‘The First Vijay’: How Tamil Nadu Rewrote Its Political History?
'Will Vijay be the next MGR?' This was the question every media house raised before May 4, 2026. But to everyone's surprise, the question turned into, 'Is MGR the old Vijay?' after the results. Yes, Vijay has surpassed the vote share of MGR with around 35% vote share in his debut polls by standing alone, while MGR secured around 31% vote share along with his alliance partners. This type of result is not a normal phenomenon; rather, it marks a paradigmatic shift in the voting pattern of the Tamil Nadu electorate. If someone says these results are merely an outcome of his cinematic personality, then that explanation alone fails to answer many serious questions. If cinema alone was the reason, why couldn’t Mr. Sivaji Ganesan and Mr. Kamal Haasan make a significant mark in politics? Why could Mr. Rajinikanth not even dare to fully enter politics despite promising it earlier?
The intention matters more than anything else. It is not at all an easy decision for the highest-paid actor in South India to quit his career at its peak for an uncertain and highly volatile political field, which could potentially cost both his professional and personal life if he failed to deliver results. This genuine intention of Vijay connected deeply with people who had grown weary of the corrupt duopoly of the Dravidian parties for almost six decades. Most importantly, the conventional way of electoral politics has been dismantled in Tamil Nadu. Some of the serious questions revolving around Mr. Vijay before the elections were:
- How can he penetrate the solid vote banks of the Dravidian parties?
- Could he oppose the DMK and BJP at the same time?
- Does TVK have the party structure and infrastructure to counter the conventional forces?
- Could all his crowd support be converted into votes?
- Would TVK merely split urban votes while lacking stakes in rural areas?
- Would Vijay’s candidates be known faces in their respective constituencies?
- How many protests had Mr. Vijay held for the people against the government?
- Does Mr. Vijay lack the courage to meet the press?
- Does his party have a commendable ideology to propagate?
But the people of Tamil Nadu had different plans. When the age-old Dravidian parties had already satisfied all the above conventional criteria, many people still felt betrayed, and several serious issues had become normalized in Tamil Nadu. Some of those issues are:
- Behind the facade of North vs South and Aryans vs Dravidians, these political parties have increasingly been perceived as deeply corrupt in the entire nation while sidelining real governance issues.
- By projecting themselves as the only barrier against the entry of BJP into Tamil Nadu, they ensured a strong vote base among minority communities, due to which some real governance and law-and-order concerns were often sidelined.
- The parties which advocated social justice often chose candidates based on caste calculations.
- It has become almost impossible for these parties to field a Dalit candidate in general constituencies.
- Vote-for-money politics has become normalized, and the flow of money during elections is unimaginable.
- Local party men flourish during their party’s rule through blatantly accumulated wealth and influence.
These are some of the major issues accelerating Vijay's political growth in Tamil Nadu. Moreover, people became convinced that ADMK was never a true alternative to the DMK and that there would only be a change in faces, but not in the scenes. This led to massive support for Mr. Vijay, especially among youth and women.
The Tamil Nadu electorate once again proved its political maturity because they did not give the amateur TVK a full majority to rule independently. Instead, they delivered a hung assembly, compelling TVK to seek support from the Left parties, which itself acts as a democratic check and balance for the new government. They have given the conventional forces a warning call — wake up or perish. Tamil Nadu now has a strong opposition force with an almost equal number of MLAs on the opposition side. Therefore, this Assembly truly has the potential to perform effectively while maintaining adequate checks on the ruling party.
One thing is clear: if you fail to adapt to change, you will perish. The people of Tamil Nadu have proved it once again!!
